What’s in My Shopping Cart

It’s been so long since I’ve done a What’s in my Shopping Cart post, I thought I’d share a few of the items I have sitting in my cart on various sites. I’ve actually ordered a few of the items and I’ll share my thoughts once they arrive : ) Happy Tuesday!

House Update – Lighting

Hey Guys, it has been so long since I’ve posted anything and I feel bad about that. I keep saying I’m going to do better, but then life gets in the way…. bad excuse, I know.  But anyways, I wanted to pop in and give a quick up date on what projects we’ve been doing around the house.

I’ve started and erased, and rewrote, and erased this post several times, but can’t seem to write the post to where I think everything sounds right.  Instead I’m going to take the easy way out and just do  a list of upgrades we’ve made to the house and have planned.

  1. New ceiling fan in the foyer.  When we purchased the house there was a relatively, albeit dated, fan in the foyer. The lights worked, however the fan itself didn’t work. Because of the style of our house we really needed the fan to help cool the house down in the summer and push heat down in the winter. John’s parents were kind enough to buy us this fan for Christmas ( we really don’t need any clothes or other stuff). We had a contractor come out and install the fan as well as tighten the junction box for the fan in the master bedroom. It’s amazing how a little upgrade and make a room look and feel completely different.  (before is on the left and after is on the right)

    2. I wanted to share the fan John installed in our bedroom. One thing I really disliked about our bedroom is how hot it can get at night. We have a small circular fan on a dresser that runs pretty much all the time, but it isn’t able to really cool down the room; which is the primary reason we wanted the fan in the bedroom. Before that there was a very dated (think 1980s) style overhead light. I’m really glad that is gone. I forgot to get a before picture, which I do a lot, so an after picture will have to suffice.

    3.  Hallway light. Again, nothing was wrong with the hallway light, but the fixture was terribly dated and the didn’t give off much light. John found these LED ceiling flushmount lights at Home Depot.  They come in a 2 pack and are currently on sale for $40, marked down from $100! I love how we can actually see in the hallway now and the flushmount lights are a more modern look while not having that cold look that can sometimes accompany the modern decor style. IMG_8470

Upcoming projects:

– We are having new hardwood floors installed on Friday! Our carpets aren’t in the best shape and I hate to have people over because of their condition, so these floors have been on the top of my wish list since we moved in. After the floors are installed we will need to get some area rugs and a runner for the hallway. I have one area rug picked out for the family room and we have a hand-me-down runner to use temporarily. I am not sure what it is, but I really hate shopping for rugs.

– Backsplash, the original homeowners decided to install wallpaper in the kitchen around the sink and over the counters instead of a backsplash. Again, not a terrible situation, but very dated. John and I used Christmas money we received from family to purchase backsplash tiles and materials. This past week I had a day off and spent a few hours removing the wallpaper and prepping the area for the tile. Everything is all set, we just need to rent a wet saw and find a weekend when my parents can watch Wallace so we can install the backsplash.

– Crown molding and new toilets are next on our list. I am not sure which we will do first, but I’ll be sure to keep you updated on the changes as we make them.

– Also on the list is painting the cabinets. I want to paint the upper and lower cabinets a very soft gray, but John wants to use a light gray chalk paint on just the lower cabinets. I’d love to hear from you on which you think would look better. Personally, I think once we have the floors in and the backsplash up it may be easier to decide which way to go. But please let me know your opinion.

That is all for now. As you can see we have a lot going on around the house on top of raising a very active 21 month old! I promise to try and drop in more often and give updates. Have a great Sunday!

SOAP & GLORY Breakfast Scrub

You guys, I am about to tell you about the best face and body scrub. I found SOAP & GLORY Breakfast Scrub while searching for something to help my dry skin, which is somehow oily in certain spots. I have been very lucky that, for the most part, I’ve had great skin and only really had bad breakouts when I was 25-27 years old, right before my wedding and when I was pregnant. However, this winter has been especially harsh on my skin giving me super dry skin (even my son’s cheeks are unusually dry) and about 6 weeks ago I started to have terrible breakouts. Desperate for something to help my skin I began googling and that is when I stumbled upon SOAP & GLORY Breakfast Scrub . My sister had asked me what I wanted for Christmas and not really knowing what I wantedtold her a gift card. When I found this scrub I sent her the link and retracted my previous request for this stuff instead. I have a great sister because she gave me a J.Crew gift card and the scrub.

A few quick things about SOAP & GLORY Breakfast Scrub , because I don’t want to draw this out #bedtime.

  1. When I saw that the scent is Maple I was a bit hesitant. I didn’t want to walk around smelling like syrup all day. Once I smelled the scrub my mind was easily changed. The scent is definitely a maple scent, yet, it is not over powering.
  2.  SOAP & GLORY Breakfast Scrub  is not joking around. This sh*t works! I noticed after the first time I used it a difference in my skin. My skin was softer and not as dry. After a few days of using the scrub nightly I noticed not only was my skin better, but my face was clearing up as well. I am convinced dead skin traps oils and helps cause breakouts. This scrub removes that thin layer with no irritations, for me at least and I have very sensitive skin.
  3. Per the label, the scrub is a body scrub and can be used anywhere. My whole life I have never been able to find a lotion that can help hydrate my biceps and they are forever dry and red. I used the scrub and within a week noticed my arms looked so much better! No longer were my arms red and dry.
  4.  SOAP & GLORY Breakfast Scrub is only $15!!!! there is really no reason not to buy it. I am always going to have a jar in my shower from here on out. I actually like the scrub so much I bought some of their hand lotion and love it as well.                                                                                                                                                                                 Soap and Glory is an amazing brand, their products deliver, smell great and have affordable price points. LED Bathroom Sink Faucet

Yea, if that title seems a bit weird I can understand why. Thursday night I got up to use the restroom and when I walked in I noticed a small stream of water coming from the faucet. I assumed someone had just not turned the water off all the way; no big deal. Well, when I went to turned the knob on the faucet I found it was turned all the way off. I woke up John and he discovered the water line had a hole in it, the pipe under the sink had cracked, and there was another issue with a part (I can’t remember which part) under the knob. John turned off the water saying he’d go to Home Depot in the morning and get everything to fix it. While John was at Home Depot he texted me and asked what I thought about just getting a whole new faucet, “sure!” John picked out (and he did a great job) a matted silver faucet with an LED light. I wasn’t sure what I was expecting when I got a text that there was an LED light on the new sink. I pretty sure I was thinking of a night club. Either way, I love it! the LED light isn’t noticeable when looking at the faucet and I quickly found it is very nice at night to not have a bright light glaring at you during a 2am bathroom break. What’s more, both John and I were amazed at how a simple faucet upgrade can really refresh/upgrade a small bathroom. It is a really simple and reasonably inexpensive upgrade.

Since buying a house any extra money we have goes to upgrading or changing things in the house we don’t like. The house itself is in amazing condition and was well cared for and maintained. All the changes we are making are purely cosmetic and I love quick little fixes like this.

A Few of My Favorite Gifts

I am very lucky to have such a generous family. Every year I struggle to make a Christmas list, but when I do manage to get one written my family and John always seem to work together to get me exactly the right items, whether they are on my list or not. This year I received many wonderful gifts, but I wanted to share a few of my favorites. xmas

Christmas Wish List

As I get older my Christmas Wish List gets harder to write. Typically when creating my list for my parents or John, I try to keep a few things in mind, but the two top questions i ask myself are what do I really need and will I use this item a lot? I have spent the last two years trying to de-clutter our house and expel any none wanted and used items to some vortex in a far away galaxy, some call it goodwill.  This year I decided to put a few staples on my list, a few splurges (that I am not expecting to get), and a few items I’d love to have ( example nicer soap or lotion) but won’t spend the money on. What is on everyone else’s Christmas list? How do you decide what to ask for? When is too old to even make a Christmas list?

A few things about some of the gifts I choose:

Pjs: I ask for PJS every year. It is an easy gift for those who don’t like to shop, but don’t want to give a gift card AND you can get pjs anywhere. My mother-in-law gave my a cute pair with foxes from Old Navy, they are very soft and a good thickness AND they were only $7!

micro fleece blanket: I gave this as a gift to one of Wallace’s teachers, Target only $20! I also had it monogramed for $8 to make it a little more personal

Christmas List, Do I really Need One?

As I’ve gotten older my Christmas list has become harder and harder to make; which is a real surprise when you think about it. I have decided the reason my Christmas list is becoming more difficult to create is the result of a handful or reasons.

1. As I’ve gotten older I just buy what I need when I need it. I used to use Christmas and my birthday as a way to get stuff I needed or wanted that I otherwise wouldn’t have the money to get. Now that I am older and work full time I “have” the money to buy the things I need when I need them.

2. I have stopped impulsively buying or putting things on my wish list. I take the time to truly thing, is this something I want? Is this something I need? Is this something I will use often? I will place an item in my shopping cart and leave it there for a few days. If after 4 or 5 days I’m still thinking about the item, I put it on my list. If I am not still thinking about it or completely forget about it, then I obviously don’t really want it and delete it from my cart. My wants have decreased in part because I don’t have the time to mindless online shop online like I used to. Thank you motherhood.

3. Stuff isn’t a priority anymore. By stuff I mean clothes, shoes, and accessories. Now I find myself wanting new counter tops, back splash, things for the house.  I’d much rather have someone give me money to pay a bill or daycare. Again, I just don’t need things anymore unless something breaks or completely wears out.

4. I don’t want junk in our house. The last 3 years I feel like I’ve been working endlessly to get rid of all the clothes and stuff in our house that we don’t need or use. My biggest fear when John and I bought our house was that we would again start to accumulate stuff we didn’t need or use because we have so much storage. I’ve become very lax over the last 6 months and I can see stuff piling up all ready. So over the next few weeks I’ll be throwing away, donating, and listing items to get them out of our house for good.

5. Christmas is more about my son. Instead of getting stuff for myself, I’d rather get him a nicer toy or something he will really love. Wallace is my focus and I’m happy to do without so he has an amazing Christmas.

All that being said, I’m still going to post a gift idea list for someone like myself; someone who doesn’t really need anything, but you may still need to find a gift for. Look for that in a few days : )

P.S. If you are looking for some great Christmas items for low prices, please checkout my items for sale on Poshmark. I am accepting all reasonable offers. I have tons of J. Crew, Anthropologie, and a few kids items.
