Favorite Blogger and How She Helped Me Love My Closet Again

One of my all time favorite bloggers, The Northeast Girl, is pregnant and I just had to write a post about her cute pregnancy style. I told John that whenever we are ready to have kids I am totally copying her outfits. I love how they show off her bump without being to showy. I don’t like my clothes to be tight on me, and The Northeast Girl styles her bump in cute, breathable tunics, a-line/fit and flare dresses, and some j crew painter tees in various patterns. Additionally, I really like that many of the clothes she is buying will work post baby as well (tunics and the dresses).

Finally, the Northeast Girl is one of my favorite bloggers because she mixes high and low—meaning she wears everything from Anthropologie and J. Crew to Nordstroms to Shopbop to Forever 21 and Loft. I’m really bad about branching out with my clothing brands. Before I moved to Charlotte, NC my mom and I used to go shopping all the time. I went into different stores and gave other brands a chance. Then I moved and my mom wasn’t there to shop with me anymore (outside of my mom and sister I don’t really like to shop with anyone). For one reason or another when I wanted new clothes or needed an item for a specific event, I just went to J. Crew or Anthropologie; I stopped shopping around. When I started reading The Northeast Girl I began expanding my brands again including Target, Loft, and some Forever 21. I’m still crazy loyal to J. Crew, Shopbop and Anthropologie, but it’s nice to have variety again. Rarely do I now open my closet and think, “I hate everything in here” or “I have nothing to wear”. I know it sounds crazy to say, this blogger helps me shop better, but it’s true. Sometimes seeing what others are wearing can inspire an outfit around that crazy printed skirt you have but have never worn because you have absolutely no idea what to wear with it, but no, you aren’t giving it up. Am I right?

One other blog I’m starting to really get into is Merrick’s Art. Merrick lives in CA and has this cool laid back artsy style I can only dream of pulling off. She also sews like a bad ass and makes the most AMAZING dresses. My mom is a fantastic seamstress and I’m hoping maybe she can help me make some of the dresses Merrick has made and posted patterns for. Check her out here

Happy Friday!

Long Weekend

How was everyone’s long weekend? I have mixed feelings when it comes to long weekends. On one hand I love the 3 days off. But on the other hand, it throws me off for the work week. Yesterday I kept thinking it was Tuesday when really it was Wednesday. Not that I’m complaining, it just really throws me off for some things. I feel like I need that underwear that has a day of the week printed on each pair. Did anyone else have those growing up? And if you did, did anyone else ever wear the wrong day of the week (like wear Tuesday on Friday) and feel like a total bad ass?

Anyways, John and I definitely got the most out of our weekend.  On Saturday we had a few friends over for a cookout and then Sunday went to my parents house for dinner. Monday I did some cleaning, ran errands, started a new book, and went on a 3 mile walk. John decided to do some work from home so he didn’t return to a laundry list of things to do.

I wish I had something more exciting to right about, but sometimes no news is good because it means nothing terrible is going on and we are actually relaxing. I finally finished The Hangman’s Daughter and I’m hoping to write a book review this weekend. John and I have plans to go to Lynchburg for the day (J. Crew Clearance center. so excited ). Hopefully I won’t be too car-lagged to write a review when we get back.  Also, one of my good friends and animal rescue buddies is pregnant with her first baby (a girl!) and I told her I’d knit her a baby blanket. I’ve been spending most of my spare time working on the blanket hoping I’ll complete this little project before the baby comes. #fingerscrossed

How was everyone else’s long weekend? Whose excited for a 4 day work week?!

Friday + Memorial Day

Happy Friday, guys! In just a few short hours the work week will be over and so will begin a 3 day weekend! Well, what I hope is a 3 day weekend for you all. John and I are having a few friends over for a cookout on Saturday. So tonight or tomorrow we will need to make a grocery store run. I’m hoping to go tonight because I hate going to the grocery store during the day; it’s always so crowded.

Besides our cookout, I think John and I will just be hanging out this weekend. However, I am going to check the RVA event calender and see if anything fun is going on in the city Monday. If not, we may just go out to lunch or dinner. Below are a few Memorial Day outfits I have picked out. I’m going to be wearing the casual one since we are just cooking out. But I made them when I wasn’t sure what we were doing yet.

Do you have any fun Memorial Day plans? What ever they are be safe and have fun!

A Chore Filled Weekend

I am not sure how, but every weekend John and I seem to get a million things done, but still feel like we accomplished nothing. This past weekend flew by, but, hey, don’t they all?

John was sick most of the week, so Friday night we just hung out and watched episodes of Bob’s Burgers on Netflix. Saturday John had an eye appointment that turned into a 3 hour ordeal. Luckily, Lens Crafter’s is located in the mall, so I did a little shopping while John had his eye appointment and ordered new lenses. We grabbed lunch and bought John this pair of Sperry Gold Cup boat shoes. A few things about these Sperry boat shoes, first, they are perforated making them super breathable for summer. I’m hoping because they are perforated they won’t get the shoe sweat funk most summer shoes get.  Second, there is a non-marking rubber sole that is wave-siped making them perfect for wet-dry traction, so no slipping! Third, the sole inside is padded. John an I went on a walk and he said the shoes are very supportive and comfortable. Finally, “the Gold Cup Collection takes the inimitable Sperry style to the next level with hand-burnished leathers, meticulous design and 18-karat gold-plate details for a touch of shine to seal the deal.”  John has need a pair of “summer shoes” for a while now, I’m so over him wearing tennis shoes all the time, and I think we found the perfect pair. Now John has his eye on this Gold Cup pair.

Let’s be honest, it’s really hard to leave the mall empty handed, right? Which is why on Saturday I got this super soft and adorable top from Anthropologie. I love the peach color, surprisingly a color missing from my wardrobe, and the detailing around the sleeves, neck, and cute dotted chiffon back panel are the added little details to make this shirt perfect. I’m planning on wearing it with my blue and white seersucker shorts (similar to these).

Sunday was the usual, church, lunch at El Caporal, grocery shopping, cleaning, a long walk with Otis around the lake, laundry, and Animation Domination. I always wake up Monday mornings thinking, “maybe while I was asleep a third weekend day was added.” Hasn’t happened yet, but maybe one day… At least this coming weekend is a 3 day weekend! Who has fun memorial plans?

Until next time, happy Tuesday!

Productive Weekend + New Chair

How was everyone’s weekend? Mondays always bum me out because its the beginning of the work week. I don’t know many people who like Mondays, but I’m sure they are out there.

This weekend was surprisingly productive. Saturday Otis and I went on two long walks around the lake, one in the morning and one in the evening, I did laundry, cleaned the house, and even got to read a little. I also had every intention of rug shopping, really I did, but instead I ended up going to the mall to visit my friend Liz at J. Crew and got a tad bit distracted. J. Crew is having this amazing sale in stores 40% off sale clothes 50% off sale accessories, and 25% off shorts. I figured with a sale like that it was a great time to stock up on a few items for summer. I also popped into Madewell where I got this amazing dress (it’s so much better in person) for 25% off.

J. Crew and Madewell weren’t my only stops at the mall. As I’ve shared on my little blog before, John and I are working on replacing and getting some things we need for our house. I ran into Pottery Barn to check on my dream rug, still there, and to see if they had any cute free standing paper towel racks. No, they don’t. So I decided to do a quick walk through at Crate and Barrel. I have nothing against Crate and Barrel, but typically their furniture and housewares are a bit too modern for my taste. But I decided to check for a paper towel holder anyway because they do have very reasonably priced random kitchen items. I struck out on the paper towel holder, however I did score this amazing chair for $45!!!  John and I have a desk in the spare room but no chair. We’ve never really searched for a desk chair just because there have been other more important items we need for the house first. Yet today, there it was, the perfect little desk chair and on sale, marked down from $150, and absolutely nothing wrong with it.

To be honest, when I first saw that this chair was only $45 I thought there was an error with the price and asked a sales woman. She said the chair was part of a set of 4, but the other 3 had been sold. The chair had been marked down several times and there was no way I was letting this bad boy get away from me.

I snapped this picture before placing the chair at the desk in the spare room. While I would love to share a photo of this cute chair in it’s new home, our spare room is a bit of a mess. John and I did get a cheaper rug to put in the spare room for now, and currently stuff is everywhere from where we had to move furniture to lay the rug down. Very rarely have I found such a great find for the house. Usually I just suck it up and pay full price for whatever it is so I don’t have to keep hunting, especially if I love the item. I’m still full of excitement, is that weird? Probably. But it really is the little things in life.

I hope everyone had a GREAT weekend and don’t be too upset that it’s Monday.

Pork and Music Festival

11118120_10100321610442272_8249882770730295337_nJohn and I have officially been in RVA for 3 weeks and we are loving it! Last weekend we went to the Pork and Music Festival with three of our friends. While I’m not a huge fan of pork, I pretty much only eat bacon, I wasn’t about to turn down some fun in the sun with friends.

The Pork and Music Festival was hosted by the ACCA Shriners and $25 got you All You Can Eat BBQ & Ribs with Baked Beans, Cole Slaw, Potato Salad, Tea, Lemonade, & Domestic Beer. There was also wine for $1 a glass and funnel cake for $2. Everything was delicious. Additionally, there was a really cool band that played a wide variety of music (the band even had a horn section). My favorite was when the band played some songs by Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. Unfortunately I can’t remember the name of the band, but I do remember a member saying they have been a band since 1974!

One of the many great things about RVA is the many, many festivals that are put on all Spring and Summer. The Watermelon Festival is in August and I know the Strawberry Festival is coming up soon. I’m excited to say we will be busy for many weekends to come.

This weekend I’m attempting to finish the last of the unpacking (the few random things we still need to find places for), do some intense cleaning, laundry, maybe go rug shopping, and HOPEFULLY finish The Hangman’s Daughter by Oliver Potzsch, which is such a great book and I regret starting it when we were begining our move because I haven’t had time to sit and read it. Instead I’ve been reading for 20 minutes here and there when I can.

I hope everyone has a relaxing weekend and can either ignore or knock out those “To Do” lists.

P.S. below are a few pictures from the Pork and Music festival

Absence

Sorry for the absence, but the screen on my laptop literally fell off. John ordered me a new laptop and hopefully it will be here soon.

We are almost completely done unpacking!!! Just  a few little things left to do. We bought new area rugs for the kitchen (here) and my closet, and got two temporary rugs (only $20 at Costco and measure 6 x 9) for the spare rooms. I still haven’t found the perfect rug for either of the bedrooms, however, I am getting this rug from Pottery Barn for the main room. I’m so excited, it’s perfect.

J Crew is currently running a promotion of 30% off sale items online, but in stores its 40% off! I bought these shorts Saturday in the Newport Blue color and I love them. I now have the navy and soft grey colors in my shopping basket. These shorts are very flattering on, and just the right weight for hot weather while still breathable.  I also love that they can be dressed up or down

Hopefully I’ll be back on here soon; pending my laptop arrival. Until then, here’s to a quick work week
